Glasgow's M8 set for nine months of roadworks

Scotland’s busiest road, the M8, will be undergoing significant disruptions lasting nine months due to extensive roadworks at Junction 26. Commencing on Monday, the £10m project aims to upgrade and refurbish four bridges plagued by potholes, which were constructed in 1968 and traverse local roads and the railway. The bridges – Hillington Interchange East, Hillington Interchange West, Hillington Rail, and Hillington Slip – are in dire need of resurfacing and repairs to rectify wear and tear issues, including the replacement or reinforcement of inadequate edge parapets and central reservation barriers. The scope of work will encompass five phases, scheduled from 8 September until 10 May.

The first phase of the M8 roadworks, starting on Monday, will introduce a contraflow system on the mainline carriageway at Junction 26, necessitating traffic to flow in the opposite direction than usual. Lane closures, including the shutdown of the eastbound on-slip road, will be implemented alongside traffic diversions. Subsequent phases will alternate lane closures in eastbound and westbound directions, with highlighted periods of complete closures and significant delays anticipated. Average speed cameras will be operational throughout the works, with 40mph restrictions to ensure safety for workers and the public.

While delays are expected, Amey envisions minimal disruptions during the initial phase of work, with peak and off-peak delays projected to reach up to 15 minutes during peak times. The improvements, deemed crucial for maintaining the safety and reliability of Scotland’s trunk road network, aim to pre-empt more severe closures and ensure the M8’s continued support to communities, road users, and businesses across the region. In tandem with the ongoing M8 enhancements, other projects such as temporary repairs at the Woodside Viaduct and maintenance on various footbridges and junctions are already in progress or slated to begin, signifying a comprehensive effort to bolster the country’s infrastructure
