Culture reporter Noor Nanji has announced that Matt Tebbutt, a chef and television presenter, will be taking over the role of judge on the upcoming series of MasterChef: The Professionals, the BBC has confirmed. Tebbutt will be joining Marcus Wareing and Monica Galetti on the popular cooking show. Tebbutt expressed his excitement, stating that it is “an absolute honor” to be working alongside two respected figures in the food industry.
Gregg Wallace, the previous host, was dismissed in July following a report that upheld 45 allegations of inappropriate conduct on the show, including claims of unwelcome physical contact and being in a state of undress. An independent inquiry conducted by a law firm was initiated by Banijay, the production company behind MasterChef, in response to a BBC News investigation that initially brought these allegations to light. Wallace issued an apology, acknowledging the distress caused by his actions, although he stated that he never intended to harm or humiliate anyone.
The report also verified a separate complaint accusing Wallace of using a highly offensive racist term towards his co-host John Torode. Both hosts were subsequently removed from the show, and the BBC has yet to reveal their replacements for the main amateur series of MasterChef. Tebbutt, known for his extensive experience in the restaurant industry and contributions to food and travel publications, has been viewed as a potential successor. He expressed his eagerness to begin his new role and work alongside Wareing and Galetti on the competition.
The transmission date for the upcoming series of MasterChef: The Professionals has not been finalized. The scandal surrounding the show began last year when allegations of misconduct by Wallace were brought to light. Banijay conducted an investigation that confirmed 83 claims against Wallace, with over 40 being upheld. Wallace has denied some of the allegations but expressed remorse for any distress caused by his actions. Torode also faced accusations of racist language, which he denies and deems unacceptable. The future of the completed celebrity series and the Christmas special, which featured Torode and Grace Dent, remains unclear
