In a demonstration against the government’s prohibition of Palestine Action, at least 150 individuals have been taken into custody. Located in the heart of London’s Parliament Square, hundreds of individuals congregated, brandishing Palestinian flags and chanting “free Palestine”. Signage was also present, with messages such as “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action” displayed.
Arrests were made by the Metropolitan Police for endorsing a proscribed organization and for the assault of a law enforcement officer. Palestine Action was outlawed under the Terrorism Act by the government back in July, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison for those who are found to be members or supporters.
Protesters were forewarned by the Met that outwardly supporting the banned group would lead to detainment. Organizers from Defend Our Juries, the group responsible for arranging the rally, expressed that resistance against the ban was increasing at an exponential rate. As the clock struck 13:00, participants, including many elderly individuals, wrote messages on placards in solidarity with Palestine Action. Subsequently, police began detaining those holding signs, one by one, as onlookers shouted their disapproval.
Accompanied by shouts of “you’re supporting genocide”, tensions escalated between the demonstrators and the officers enforcing the arrests. City of London Police officers were deployed to assist the Met halfway through the demonstration in Parliament Square. The number of attendees defying the ban was approximated at 1,500 on Saturday afternoon. Amnesty International’s Kerry Moscogiuri criticized the arrests as “genuinely shocking”, highlighting the harsh reality of police detaining peaceful protesters under terrorism laws
