Public banned from Commons chamber after hidden phone found

Following the discovery of a mobile phone hidden in the main chamber of the House of Commons, access for the public to enter the chamber has been temporarily suspended. The phone was found shortly before the Prime Minister’s Questions session on Wednesday, prompting the security measures to be enforced. Media reports suggest that the phone was strategically placed near the front benches where government ministers usually sit. The ban on public access to both the Commons and Lords main chambers will remain in effect “until further notice,” as stated by a UK Parliament spokesperson.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the discovery of the mobile phone during a routine search of the Commons chamber and have initiated an investigation into the incident. It is believed that the phone was deliberately placed to disrupt proceedings in the House, causing concern over the security of the parliamentary building. Despite the disturbance, access to the rest of the Parliament remains open to the public with enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of all visitors and staff members. Measures are being taken to address the breach and prevent any future security risks within the premises.

In response to the incident, the UK Parliament has decided to limit full public tours in both Chambers starting from Saturday 6 September until further notice. However, public access to other areas of Parliament remains unaffected, allowing individuals to continue exploring the historic grounds of the Palace of Westminster. The safety and security of everyone present in Parliament is of utmost importance, and proactive security measures are being enforced to uphold the well-being of all individuals within the premises. Residents are encouraged to contact their local MP to book a free guided tour of the Parliament or to explore the self-guided audio tours available for tourists and visitors
