Lawyer of jailed Teesside teen Bella Culley criticises embassy

A British teenager named Bella Culley is currently detained in Georgia, South Caucasus, on accusations of drug smuggling. Her lawyer, Malakhaz Salakaia, criticized the British embassy for not providing enough support to his client. Despite her family appointing legal representation, the embassy has failed to visit Culley or offer any written references. Salakaia expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of assistance from the British authorities.

The Foreign Office confirmed that they have had just one in-person visit to the prison where Culley is held, which took place on 16 May. Culley, who hails from Billingham on Teesside, is currently in discussions with prosecution and defense lawyers to potentially reach a deal for her release. She has been informed that a substantial amount of money is required for her freedom, as her sentence could range from up to 20 years in jail to life imprisonment.

Despite being five months pregnant, Culley’s health has allegedly not been checked on by the embassy. The Foreign Office spokesperson mentioned that they are in communication with Culley’s family and the local authorities in Georgia. Culley’s troubles began when she went missing in Thailand and was later apprehended at Tbilisi International Airport with illegal drugs in her possession. She pleaded not guilty to possession and trafficking charges, stating that she was coerced into the situation. Culley professed her innocence, claiming she is a good person, a university student, and does not engage in drug activities
