Murder charge 20 years after Steven Cook goes missing in Crete

Charges have been brought against a man in connection with the murder of Steven Cook, a British man who went missing while on holiday in Greece 20 years ago. Steven Cook, who was 20 at the time, disappeared in the resort of Malia, Crete, on September 1, 2005, during his first solo trip abroad. His remains were discovered in 2017 at the bottom of a well by workers in the area, with little progress made in the case since then. A 38-year-old British man, believed to have been working in Malia around the time of Cook’s disappearance, has now been charged by Greek authorities and extradited back to the UK by Cheshire Police.

Chris Cook, Steven’s older brother, expressed the complex emotions that the family is experiencing following the news of the murder charge against the accused individual. He mentioned that the family has been trying to come to terms with the loss for the past two decades and that while legal justice may be served, nothing can make up for the ordeal they have been through as a family. This year’s anniversary holds additional significance as it is the first one the family is celebrating without both of their parents, who have passed away in recent years.

The case has been transferred to the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion in Greece, with a hearing scheduled for October 21. According to Greek lawyer Ioannis Kostantoudakis, the suspect may not need to be present physically during the trial, though the court could request his presence, potentially leading to an extradition request to UK authorities. Cheshire Police has been collaborating with Greek authorities on the developments in Steven Cook’s case and are providing support to the Cook family through specialized officers. Chris Cook fondly remembered his brother as a kind-hearted individual, recalling cherished memories of watching the 2005 Champions League final with him, where Liverpool emerged victorious against AC Milan
