London Pride boss under investigation for alleged misuse of funds

The CEO of Pride in London has been suspended due to allegations of bullying and misusing vouchers donated by a sponsor to purchase luxury perfumes. Christopher Joell-Deshields, who has been serving in this role since 2021, is facing multiple accusations from volunteer directors and others within the organization. Concerns have been raised by current and former volunteers about the potential damage these allegations could cause to one of Europe’s largest pride events, especially during a challenging period for pride organizations in the UK.

In response to the allegations, Mr. Joell-Deshields declined to discuss the matter publicly, but asserted that he remains in his position. The reported misconduct includes the misuse of donations and fostering a toxic work environment at the organization, which relies on over a hundred year-round volunteers and four paid staff members. Specifically, Mr. Joell-Deshields stands accused of using sponsored vouchers to acquire high-end fragrances, as well as Apple speakers and headphones. Furthermore, there are claims of a bullying culture, with one disabled volunteer alleging mistreatment through bullying WhatsApp messages from Mr. Joell-Deshields.

Following the emergence of these allegations, a newly-formed board of directors for London LGBT Community Pride (LLCP) suspended Mr. Joell-Deshields from his role. Nevertheless, Mr. Joell-Deshields has contested the board’s authority to take this action. Meanwhile, investigations into the claims are ongoing, with a spokesperson for the board stating they are addressing the allegations seriously and upholding a safe and inclusive environment within the organization. The situation unfolds amidst a challenging period for pride organizations across the UK, which are facing financial support shortages and volunteer shortages.

Volunteers at Pride in London have expressed fears that the credibility of the organization may suffer as a result of these allegations, making it more challenging to secure new financial support. Some volunteers, speaking on condition of anonymity, have highlighted the existence of a culture of bullying within the organization, particularly originating from top leadership. These revelations have sparked concerns within the community about the future of the organization and the need for greater transparency and accountability.
