A new development has emerged in the case of the “disgusting” racist abuse directed at England footballer Jess Carter on social media. Following reports of abusive messages sent to the 27-year-old defender during the UEFA Women’s Euros in July, Derbyshire Constabulary has made a second arrest. A 30-year-old man from Ripley has been arrested on suspicion of making malicious communications in connection to the incident. This comes after the arrest of a 59-year-old man from Great Harwood, Lancashire, on similar charges the previous week.
Chief Constable Mark Roberts of Cheshire Police, who serves as the National Police Chief Council’s lead for football policing, emphasized that such vile abuse should not be tolerated. He made it clear that racist behavior of this nature is unacceptable and enforcement action will be taken. In response to the abuse she received, Carter, who hails from Warwick, had announced previously that she would be stepping back from social media. The abuse occurred while she was participating in the tournament, prompting the UK Football Policing Unit to launch an investigation in collaboration with social media platforms to identify those responsible for the offensive messages.
Acknowledging Carter’s courage in confronting the abuse and cooperating with the investigation, Mr. Roberts commended her actions. The ongoing efforts to address online racism and hold perpetrators accountable demonstrate a commitment to providing a safe environment for athletes and individuals to engage on social media platforms without fear of discrimination or abuse. The arrests made in connection to the racist messages sent to Carter reflect a collective stance against such behavior within the football community and society at large
