The rate of home-educated pupils has been escalating over the years, from 1.6 per 1,000 pupils in 2009-10 to 15.3 per 1,000 pupils in 2024-25. Ceredigion reported the highest rate, with 32.6 of every 1,000 pupils being home-schooled in the latest academic year. Parents in Wales voluntarily notify local authorities about their decision to homeschool their children, unless the child has been withdrawn from school, potentially indicating a higher number of home-educated children.
Gavin and Kate Gibson, former secondary school teachers, established a home education business in 2024, catering to children who experienced social anxiety and other challenges. They emphasized the difficulty for some children, especially those with neurodiverse traits, in readjusting to the bustling school environment after the quietude of home learning during the pandemic.
