In Mumbai, Kushti wrestling is not just a sport but a way of life for these wrestlers who follow a disciplined routine from boyhood. Living, learning, and training together at an akhara, these men lead a monastic lifestyle, adhering to strict principles until they retire in their thirties. Photographer Jim Fenwick captured the wrestlers sitting in a pit made of earth mixed with clay and ghee, symbolizing humility and respect for the Earth.
The photo was submitted to a photography campaign by Suicide&Co, a UK charity supporting those bereaved by suicide, and The Photography Movement, a collective advocating for self-expression through photography. The campaign, titled “Always in Company,” aims to showcase the importance of companionship during difficult times, encouraging submissions from both professional photographers and the public.
