A new program at HMP Barlinnie in Scotland is helping fathers who are incarcerated bond with their children in a unique way. The Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids program, originally developed in Australia, has been tailored to improve family relationships beyond prison walls. The goal is to create a more natural and intimate setting for children to interact with their fathers, moving away from the traditional visit room setting.
The initiative was spearheaded by a research team from various universities and has been shown to have positive effects on both the physical and emotional well-being of the participants. Studies have indicated that individuals in prison are more susceptible to health issues, and children of incarcerated parents tend to experience poorer health, education, and behavioral outcomes compared to their peers. By providing a space for fathers and children to engage in activities together, the program aims to strengthen family connections and create lasting memories.
The eight-week program includes sessions on positive parenting and healthy child-rearing practices for fathers, followed by joint activities with their children. From physical exercises to fundamental movements like throwing and catching, the program offers a variety of opportunities for families to bond. Participants have expressed gratitude for the chance to reconnect with their children in ways that words cannot fully capture, emphasizing the importance of these shared experiences.
As a result of the program’s success, staff at HMP Barlinnie have trained additional colleagues from prisons across the country to implement the program in their respective locations. The Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids program will continue at HMP Barlinnie and will be introduced to other prisons in the near future, expanding its reach to more families in need of support and connection
