Two BBC journalists, Lynsey Bews and Angus Cochrane, reported that MSP Colin Smyth hosted a group of girl guides at the Scottish Parliament just days after being charged with possessing indecent images of children. Smyth, who has been suspended by Labour, engaged with the group at Holyrood on 15 August, which was 10 days after his arrest for the alleged possession of indecent images. The South Scotland MSP, aged 52, is also facing another criminal charge for allegedly concealing a secret camera in a toilet at the parliament, an allegation he denies.
Girlguiding assured that no girls were affected during the visit to Holyrood, stating that Smyth was present when “rangers” and “young leaders” visited. The visit was reportedly organized by Smyth, and trained Girlguiding adult volunteers accompanied the young people at all times, ensuring their safety. Smyth had previously mentioned that the visit was requested by constituents and had been planned for months. Despite his charges, Smyth continues to cooperate with the investigation.
Since his pass was deactivated and his resignation as convenor of the economy and fair work committee, Smyth could still contribute remotely to parliamentary proceedings, although he has been signed off work on medical grounds. Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone expressed dismay at the recent reports and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and welfare of all individuals working at the Scottish Parliament.
