Sammi Hill, a 33-year-old woman from Mapperley in Nottingham, struggled with her weight for years after gaining 8st (51.8kg) following the births of her two daughters. She found herself in a “dark hole” where she avoided socializing, took hardly any pictures of herself, and lacked confidence. Sammi was diagnosed with depression, which further demotivated her and made it challenging to lose weight.
Last year, she turned to the weight loss drug Mounjaro and saw a significant improvement in her mental health and weight loss journey. However, with the recent price hike announced by the US manufacturer of Mounjaro, Sammi is now contemplating whether she can afford to continue the treatment. The price increase, initially set at 170%, could have meant a substantial rise in the cost of the drug per month.
Sammi started using Mounjaro from an online pharmacy and experienced positive effects in managing her weight and mental health. She was able to shed 4st (25.4kg) within a year of using the drug, which works as an appetite suppressant by regulating metabolism and energy balance. Although Sammi mentioned manageable side effects like feeling sick, experts have raised concerns about potential complications with the drug, including issues with the pancreas.
After taking a break from Mounjaro to focus on her wedding, Sammi hoped to resume her weight loss journey with the drug in September. However, due to the price hike, she is uncertain about continuing the treatment. Manufacturer Eli Lilly justified the price increase to align with higher prices in Europe and the US. Despite the discounted rate for suppliers in the UK, Sammi believes the rising cost of Mounjaro will negatively impact people who can’t afford it
