Lammy 'outraged' by Israel's obstruction of aid into Gaza

The Israeli government’s refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza has sparked outrage from the UK’s foreign secretary, who announced an additional £15m in funding for medical assistance in the region. David Lammy, addressing the House of Commons, drew attention to the declaration by the UN-backed hunger monitor Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) that Gaza is currently facing a “man-made famine”.

In response to the dire situation in Gaza, Lammy reiterated the UK government’s dedication to bringing critically injured Gazan children to the UK for specialized NHS treatment. While Israel has dismissed the IPC report as “deeply flawed” and called for its retraction, Lammy emphasized the importance of a “massive humanitarian response” to prevent further deaths in the region.

Furthermore, Lammy reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to moving towards “full recognition” of a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly, unless progress is made on a ceasefire. However, shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel cautioned against recognizing a Palestinian state while hostages remain held by Hamas, some of whom have been in captivity for nearly 700 days. Lammy’s statements echoed his previous condemnation of the IPC’s declaration of famine as a “moral outrage”.

The IPC’s report revealed that half a million people in Gaza, a quarter of the population, are currently suffering from famine, with starvation rapidly spreading in Gaza City and expected to affect the rest of the enclave by September. The aid delivery process in Gaza has faced significant obstacles, with Israel attributing hunger to the actions of aid agencies and Hamas. Lammy’s announcement of an additional £15m in funding for medical aid through UK-Med and the World Health Organization Egypt underlines the ongoing efforts to ensure aid reaches those most in need
