International students warned to not overstay visas

A recent government initiative has targeted a significant number of foreign students, warning them about the consequences of overstaying their visas in the UK. The Home Office has launched a campaign in response to a concerning increase in the number of international students who arrive legally on student visas and then seek asylum once their visas expire. This move is aimed at addressing what the government has labeled as an alarming trend.

As part of the campaign, the Home Office has taken the unprecedented step of directly contacting international students through text messages and emails. Approximately 130,000 students and their families will receive a message emphasizing the importance of adhering to visa regulations in the UK. The communication clearly states, “If you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don’t, we will remove you.”

The initiative has already reached out to 10,000 international students whose visas are nearing expiration, cautioning them about the possibility of deportation. It is expected that tens of thousands more will receive similar notifications in the upcoming months, particularly during the autumn when visa applications typically surge. The message underscores the consequences of submitting an asylum claim that lacks merit and stresses the strict assessment criteria for asylum support.

While recent public attention has been on individuals arriving via small boats, a significant number also enter the UK legally on visas and subsequently seek asylum. According to Home Office data, in the year leading up to June 2025, there were 43,600 asylum claims from small boat arrivals, comprising 39% of all asylum applications. Additionally, 41,100 asylum claims originated from individuals who entered legally with a visa, with a substantial portion of such claims coming from international students. Efforts are ongoing to reduce these numbers further, as evident from a recent decline in asylum claims from individuals on skilled worker visas
