A total of 47 individuals have been charged with showing support for the banned group Palestine Action, following their arrests at a demonstration in London in July, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police. This latest wave of charges brings the overall number of individuals facing allegations of supporting Palestine Action in the capital to 114. Scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in October, they are accused of a terrorism-related offense for backing a prohibited organization.
Det. Chf Sup Helen Flanagan cautioned that those found guilty could encounter severe repercussions in terms of their professions and travel opportunities for aligning themselves with a proscribed entity. Every one of the 47 people was taken into custody during the demonstration on 19 July, with the Metropolitan Police disclosing that all reside in England. Flanagan, from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, indicated that additional decisions regarding charging are anticipated in the upcoming days and beyond.
Despite the ongoing arrests and charges, thousands persist in expressing their support for Palestine without running afoul of counter-terrorism regulations, according to Flanagan. Following Palestine Action’s proscription on 5 July, over 700 individuals have been apprehended by the Met. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper banned the group under anti-terrorism statutes after an incident where aircraft at RAF Brize Norton were defaced with paint, resulting in £7 million in damages. Lawyers representing the co-founder of Palestine Action, Huda Ammori, have contended that the ban infringes upon the right to free speech and stifles legitimate protests
