Northern Lights potentially visible across much of the UK

The Met Office has indicated that there is a possibility of the aurora borealis being visible in various parts of the UK in the upcoming days. Due to heightened solar activity, the Northern Lights might be seen further south than usual, potentially even with the naked eye. However, the Met Office has advised that solar forecasts are subject to rapid changes, and visibility could be impacted by factors such as cloud cover and light pollution.

BBC Weather has mentioned that the aurora borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, could be spotted across a significant portion of England and Wales, particularly away from western coastal regions. Northern Ireland and northeastern Scotland are noted to have the best chances of clear skies for viewing. For optimal viewing conditions, it is recommended to move away from urban areas to avoid light pollution. Alternatively, using a smartphone on night mode could also enhance the chances of witnessing the Northern Lights.

While heavy cloud cover is expected during the evenings, the Midlands is identified as a potential location with clearer skies for potential sightings in the UK. Monday night is highlighted as offering the best opportunity to catch a glimpse, with visibility extending into Tuesday night. However, by Wednesday night, there is a decrease in significant solar activity projected, diminishing the likelihood of observing the Northern Lights. The recent surge in chances for UK sightings is attributed to a rapid coronal mass ejection, which transpired late on a Saturday night.

Krista Hammond, the Met Office’s space weather manager, has remarked on the enhanced potential for aurora sightings extending farther south than usual on Monday night following the arrival of the coronal mass ejection. Hammond emphasized the importance of monitoring forecast updates due to their unpredictable nature and encouraged the public to remain informed about the latest information to maximize their chances of witnessing this natural phenomenon
