Leader of Scotland's biggest trades union suspended

Scotland’s largest trade union is currently embroiled in a controversy following the suspension of Derek Thomson, who serves as the Scottish secretary of Unite. The reason for his suspension is due to internal investigations regarding allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women. While details of the allegations have not been publicly disclosed, it is reported that they are historic in nature.

Unite, with approximately 150,000 members, takes such claims seriously and ensures they are dealt with appropriately. Derek Thomson, who assumed the role of Scottish secretary in 2023, has been a key spokesperson for the union on significant industrial issues. He has been vocal in criticizing management and governments for failing to protect jobs at the Grangemouth refinery since late 2024.

According to reports, the suspension of Thomson stems from events that occurred several years ago but have resurfaced recently. Internal conflicts within Unite have also been highlighted, particularly between supporters of the current general secretary, Sharon Graham, and her predecessor, Len McCluskey. Following McCluskey’s retirement in 2021, Graham initiated internal investigations that revealed he had received flights and football tickets from a company involved in constructing a hotel for the union.

While Thomson and Graham were allies, sources suggest that the allegations against Thomson are not necessarily linked to the internal feud within the union. It is emphasized that any accusations of inappropriate conduct must be thoroughly investigated to ensure transparency and accountability within the organization
