Liverpool has reached an agreement with Newcastle United to acquire striker Alexander Isak for a record British transfer fee of £125m. Sources close to the deal have confirmed to BBC Sport that the move for the Sweden international to Anfield has been finalized. There are suggestions that the deal could potentially reach £130m including add-ons. Isak is expected to undergo a medical examination on Monday before signing a six-year contract with Liverpool after their initial £110m offer was turned down in August.
The prolonged negotiation surrounding the 25-year-old’s transfer appears to be concluding on the final day of the transfer window. This follows Newcastle’s recent acquisition of striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart. Liverpool had already surpassed their club record signing this summer by securing Germany attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz for an initial £100m with additional add-ons totaling £16m. Isak’s arrival is anticipated to exceed that amount and, combined with the signings of several other players, would elevate Liverpool’s spending to approximately £416.2m without factoring in add-on fees, establishing a new Premier League record for the highest total expenditure in a single transfer window.
The potential transfer of Isak to Liverpool would rank among football’s most expensive deals to date if finalized. The British transfer record would surpass the £107m paid by Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, while globally, it is expected to rank third in terms of initial fees. Paris St-Germain’s signings of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe currently hold the top spots as the most expensive in football history. Isak’s departure from Newcastle comes following a successful season where he scored 27 goals in 42 appearances and helped the Magpies secure a top-five finish in the Premier League, thus qualifying for the Champions League.
Isak expressed his desire to explore a move away from Newcastle after being sidelined and missing several league games, which led to ongoing speculation about his future. Despite differing accounts regarding potential commitments from Newcastle officials, a deal has now been agreed upon after Isak’s absence from the squad in recent matches. Liverpool’s pursuit of Isak is part of their ongoing transfer activities this summer, with additional signings still being worked on as they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season
