A young talent who gained fame for mimicking seagull sounds will now be taking on the role of a judge at a local screeching competition. Cooper, an 11-year-old from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, will be the star attraction at the inaugural Weston-super-Mare Seagull Screeching Championship this Sunday. His rise to stardom began when he became an internet sensation at the age of nine, winning a European championship in 2024 and successfully defending his title in April.
Cooper will be presiding over two competitions at the event: one for participants under 12 and the other for teenagers and adults. The decision to invite him as a judge was made after he caught the attention of David Peters, the tourism marketing officer for Weston-super-Mare. Peters remarked that Cooper’s skills were so impressive that they felt compelled to bring him to their town as part of the fun-filled event.
Since achieving viral fame in 2024, Cooper has garnered international attention, including interviews with various media outlets, an appearance on a Korean documentary about seagulls, and even winning a cash prize on a German game show. The Weston-super-Mare Seagull Screeching Championship will be held at Stacks Lounge in the Sovereign Shopping Centre starting at midday on Sunday. Participants can sign up via email in advance, with a limited number of spots available on the day of the event from 10:30 to 11:30 BST.
In preparation for the competition, organizers have announced two categories to encourage widespread participation. Mr. Peters emphasized that everyone, including parents and grandparents, who can produce a convincing seagull call is encouraged to join in on the fun. The event promises to be a lively and entertaining affair, highlighting the unique talents of individuals like Cooper who have captivated audiences with their unusual skills
