A tragic car accident has resulted in the deaths of a man and a boy, leading to the closure of a section of a major road. The incident occurred on John Reid Road in South Shields, near the New Mill Inn, on Saturday evening at approximately 20:55 BST, according to Northumbria Police. Both the man in his 40s and the school-aged boy, who were passengers in a white Skoda Octavia, sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. The individual, who also suffered serious injuries, was taken to a hospital for treatment. Specialized officers are currently providing support to the families of the deceased individuals as the investigation into the circumstances leading to the car leaving the road continues.
The road has been shut down in both directions as part of the ongoing inquiry. Sgt Steve Armstrong from Northumbria Police expressed condolences to the affected families, emphasizing the support being extended to them during this tragic time. Any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage are encouraged to reach out to the authorities to assist with the investigation.
