A dog owner was in for a surprise when her brother’s pregnant dog, Tilly, unexpectedly went into labor while they were away. Rhian Boxall had been pet sitting Tilly, a yellow labrador, and was told that the dog was not due for delivery anytime soon. However, a scan later revealed that Tilly was pregnant with a litter of about half a dozen puppies.
The situation took a turn when Tilly gave birth to a total of 14 puppies, much to the amazement of Rhian and her family. The birthing process was described as a “rollercoaster of emotions” as the puppies arrived in three waves over approximately 15 hours, with sadly two of them being stillborn. Rhian, a marketing manager from Llanharan, Rhondda Cynon Taf, shared that she was on edge and did not sleep for two nights during the ordeal.
Despite the large litter, it was not a record-breaking number for a dog. The Guinness World Record for the largest litter goes to a Neapolitan mastiff who delivered 24 puppies. In a similar case, a labrador in Scotland made headlines in 2014 for giving birth to 15 puppies, which was considered a significant number for the breed. Rhian and her family, including her husband Steve and their two children, assisted Tilly with the delivery and are even considering adopting one of the puppies.
Tilly’s owner, Meirion Thomas, who was away on a holiday in the Canary Islands during the unexpected delivery, expressed shock and gratitude towards his sister for helping out in his absence. He had been told by a vet that the puppies were not due until a specific date in September, but Mother Nature had different plans.
