Four arrested at Canary Wharf anti-asylum protest

In Canary Wharf, east London, a police officer was assaulted and four individuals were taken into custody during a demonstration against the use of hotels to accommodate asylum seekers. The Metropolitan Police reported that the arrests were made for offences such as common assault, drug possession, assault on law enforcement, and public disorder.

According to the police, the demonstration was initially peaceful on the Isle of Dogs, but took a turn when a group of masked protesters entered the Canary Wharf Shopping Centre and became confrontational towards the authorities around 16:30 BST. Fortunately, the injured officer did not sustain any significant harm as a result of the altercation.

A spokesperson for the police force mentioned that approximately 50 to 100 individuals participated in the protest march from Manchester Road along Westferry Road E14. They also disclosed the implementation of a Section 60 AA in the specified area to prevent mask-wearing and a Section 35 dispersal order directing protesters to vacate the premises.

Commander Adam Slonecki, who was overseeing the policing operations in London over the weekend, asserted, “We will not tolerate this kind of behavior. Those who attend protests with masks and intentions of causing disruption will face strong consequences at future gatherings.” The unrest coincided with various anti-asylum protests and counter-demonstrations occurring throughout England, including Epping and Norwich, following the Court of Appeal’s ruling on Friday regarding the temporary injunction hindering the accommodation of asylum seekers at The Bell Hotel in Epping
