Trial date set over 'drug-laced sweets' at Stathern summer camp

Jon Ruben, a man who was taken into custody after children became unwell at a summer camp where sweets were reportedly infused with sedatives, now has a trial date scheduled. The incident occurred at Stathern Lodge in Leicestershire, leading to eight children and one adult being hospitalized. Mr. Ruben, aged 76 and hailing from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, is facing three charges of wilful ill treatment of a child involving three boys over a specified period.

During a short appearance at Leicester Crown Court, the seriousness of the allegations against Mr. Ruben was emphasized by His Honour Judge Timothy Spencer KC. The court session was adjourned until a plea hearing on 14 November, with a provisional trial date set for 27 January. Previously, Mr. Ruben had appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on 2 August where the charges against him were outlined, indicating that he had allegedly subjected three boys to harm or suffering.

Leicestershire Police first received reports of unwell children at the summer camp on 27 July, prompting the hospitalization of the affected children and the adult. All the children, boys between the ages of eight and 11, were taken for medical attention as a precautionary measure. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the police’s handling of the situation. Mr. Ruben continues to be detained at Wayte Court, located off Landmere Lane in Ruddington
