Bafta-winning actor Micheal Ward has recently made an appearance in court to address charges of rape and sexual assault. The 27-year-old actor, known for his roles in popular shows and films such as Top Boy, Small Axe, and Blue Story, attended a preliminary hearing at Thames Magistrates Court in London on Thursday. Facing two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, Ward was granted bail as his case was transferred to Snaresbrook Crown Court for a future hearing scheduled on 25 September.
While he has not yet entered a formal plea, Ward has publicly stated that he fully denies the charges brought against him. In a statement made in July following his arrest, he expressed his cooperation with the authorities and his faith in the investigation ultimately clearing his name. The alleged incidents involving a single woman are said to have occurred in January 2023, according to the Metropolitan Police.
During Thursday’s hearing, Ward appeared clad in dark glasses and a black jacket, confirming his personal details to the court. Rising to fame with his role in the 2019 hit Blue Story, he received the prestigious Rising Star award at the Bafta Film Awards the subsequent year. Notable for portraying Jamie in the Netflix series Top Boy from 2019 to 2022, Ward was nominated for best supporting actor at the Bafta TV Awards for his performance in Small Axe in 2021.
