Funeral director Amie Upton 'robbed our daughter of her dignity'

A grieving couple was left devastated after discovering their baby daughter’s body on a sofa at a funeral director’s home, feeling she had been “robbed of her dignity.” Cody and Liam Townend’s stillborn daughter, Macie-Mae, was meant to be looked after by Amie Upton. However, a recent BBC investigation revealed that Upton had been prohibited from entering certain hospital facilities for keeping infants’ bodies at her residence.

In an interview with BBC Newsnight, the Townends shared their shock and anguish upon finding their daughter’s body wrapped in a blanket at Upton’s home, miles away from where they believed she would be cared for. Mrs. Townend expressed feeling that Upton had taken over as the mother figure, leaving them powerless in the situation and stripping Macie-Mae of her dignity.

Mr. Townend emphasized the abnormality of the situation, stating that the baby should have been in a proper chapel of rest, prompting them to act swiftly to remove her from the home. Despite West Yorkshire Police’s investigation into Florrie’s Army, Upton’s service, no criminal activities were identified. The Townends have since advocated for increased regulation within the funeral industry to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Following the incident, the Townends’ MP, Mark Sewards, vowed to push for new regulatory powers to ensure the industry’s accountability. The government acknowledged the families affected by the ordeal and expressed its commitment to exploring measures to enhance standards and safeguard the dignity and respect of departed loved ones within the funeral sector. The Townends continue to visit Macie-Mae’s grave daily, urging for necessary changes to uphold the rights and security of individuals in vulnerable stages of life
