Electric cars eligible for £3,750 discount announced

A new wave of electric vehicles (EVs) has just been announced as eligible for a £3,750 discount under the government’s grant scheme. Following confirmation from the Department for Transport, models like Ford’s Puma Gen-E and e-Tourneo Courier are now part of the initiative aimed at incentivizing drivers to switch from petrol and diesel cars. This move comes as part of a broader effort to promote environmentally friendly transportation options.

Under the grant scheme, the discount is applicable to new eligible car models priced at up to £37,000, with the most eco-friendly ones receiving the largest reductions. An additional 26 models have also been given the green light for discounts of £1,500 each. Car manufacturers can submit their models for consideration, with approved vehicles automatically receiving the discount at the time of purchase.

While more EVs are anticipated to be approved in the near future, the government has set a target to ban the sale of new fully petrol or diesel cars by 2030. However, challenges remain as some drivers express concerns over the upfront costs of EVs and the need for expanded charging infrastructure in the UK. In response to these issues, there has been a call for similar incentives to be extended to hybrid vehicles as they are perceived to be more cost-effective options.

According to Ford, the retail price for a new Puma Gen-E stands at £26,245, slightly lower than the petrol version priced at £26,580. The grants aimed at reducing the cost of EVs will be supported by a £650 million fund and will be available for a period of three years. Currently, there are approximately 1.3 million electric cars in the UK, but the nation only boasts around 82,000 public charging points, underscoring the need for further investment in charging infrastructure to support the transition to electric vehicles
