A compensation of £3,500 was awarded to a woman after police officers made inappropriate comments about her sex toys during a property search in Essex. The incident occurred in October 2023 when Suffolk Police conducted a drug raid, leading to the arrest of one suspect who was later released without charges. The woman, feeling disrespected by the officers’ behavior, filed a complaint against three young officers who made jokes upon discovering the box of sex toys in her bedroom.
An internal investigation determined that the officers’ conduct was deemed “unacceptable and unprofessional,” resulting in the woman receiving the compensation. Although the officers did not physically handle or play with the sex toys found in the property, they were criticized for moving the woman’s underwear in a mocking manner without considering the potential distress it could cause her. The Norfolk and Suffolk professional standards department investigated the complaint, stating that the officers’ actions were more attributed to immaturity rather than malice.
Suffolk Police clarified that while the officers commented and laughed about the sex toy box, they refrained from interacting with the items. The department acknowledged that the officers’ behavior crossed the line and necessitated corrective measures.
