Colorful Box Causes Confusion in Small Town
By: Jamie Smith
Residents in the town of Maghera are scratching their heads as a massive yellow box mysteriously disappears from their streets. The 40m-long yellow markings, initially celebrated as the largest in both the UK and Ireland, were painted in June, reduced in size in July, and have now completely vanished.
Despite the disappearance of the yellow box, locals can expect to see its return in the fall once resurfacing work in the town is finished. Councillor Denise Johnston of Mid Ulster expressed her frustration, calling the removal of the yellow box a waste of public funds. She plans to meet with the Department for Infrastructure to address this issue.
Questions have been raised regarding the cost of the project and the decision to paint the lines in June knowing that resurfacing work was scheduled for August. SDLP councillor Denise Johnston criticized the decision, stating, “It just doesn’t make sense and it’s not a good use of public money.” She added that the situation has left many people in Maghera feeling “bemused and confused.”
The Department for Infrastructure has declined to disclose the costs of the project, citing commercial sensitivities. A spokesperson for the department explained that the yellow box markings were initially implemented to assist with bus movements to and from the main bus stop on St Lurachs Road. Although the markings were reduced in length to improve traffic flow, they will be reinstated once resurfacing on Hall Street is completed
