Caerphilly politician Hefin David found dead at home – inquest

Hefin David, a Welsh Labour politician who served as Member of the Senedd (MS) for Caerphilly since 2016, tragically passed away at the age of 47. The sudden death of Mr. David prompted an inquest to be opened into the circumstances surrounding his passing. He was found unresponsive at a property in Nelson, Caerphilly county, on 12 August, with the full inquest scheduled to take place on 7 April 2026 at Gwent Coroner’s Court.

During the inquest proceedings, it was revealed that Mr. David was found hanging at his home, and despite the efforts of paramedics who were called to the scene, he was pronounced dead at 17.27 BST. The day following his death would have been his 48th birthday. Known for his active participation in Senedd debates, Mr. David was a notable figure in Cardiff Bay and was respected by politicians across party lines. He also served as one of the five Senedd commissioners, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the institution.

Prior to his political career, Mr. David lectured at Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he taught human resource management to undergraduate and postgraduate students. In addition to his academic work, he was a Caerphilly councillor for a decade. Described as a devoted father, beloved son, brother, uncle, and partner, Mr. David’s family expressed their appreciation for the outpouring of support they received and requested privacy to mourn their loss. Prime Minister Sir Keir lauded Mr. David as a “powerful voice for the people of Wales,” while Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan remembered him as an “outstanding politician” and a cherished member of the Labour party
