One person seriously injured after helicopter crash near Shanklin

A field on the Isle of Wight became the scene of a helicopter crash, resulting in one individual being airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary responded to the incident near Shanklin around 09:24 BST, leading to the closure of A3020 Shanklin Road. Additionally, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance provided treatment and transported the patient to the Major Trauma Centre at University Hospital Southampton. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service dispatched crews from Newport, Ventnor, and Shanklin upon receiving reports of a “light aircraft incident.”

Four double crew ambulances, a specialist paramedic in a rapid response vehicle, a critical care paramedic, and the operational commander were present at the crash site. The extent of injuries aside from the one airlifted individual remains unknown at this time. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) confirmed that a team has been mobilized to initiate an investigation into the incident.

Conservative MP for the Isle of Wight East, Joe Robertson, urged people to steer clear of the crash site, describing it as a rural area surrounded by fields and a road connecting Shanklin and Sandown to Ventnor in the south, known for its rocky terrain.
