John Worboys investigated over alleged Blackpool rape in 1990s

A recent investigation has been initiated by law enforcement into the activities of convicted black cab rapist John Worboys in the 1990s, according to police officials. John Worboys, who now goes by the name John Radford, was sentenced to an indefinite prison term in 2009, with a minimum of eight years, for a series of sexual offenses against 12 women spanning from 2006 to 2008. He was later handed a life sentence with a minimum of six years in December 2019 at the Old Bailey for drugging four women.

Lancashire Police has confirmed that they are looking into an alleged rape incident that occurred over 25 years ago in Blackpool, where Worboys had been working as a stripper. A police spokesperson stated that they had received a report of rape dating back to the late 1990s in Blackpool and that an investigation has been launched, with ongoing inquiries. As of now, no arrests have been made.

Worboys, who hailed from Enfield in north London, earned the moniker of the black cab rapist for his assaults on women in the city using his Hackney carriage. Authorities believe that he targeted over 100 women before his apprehension. The decision to grant him parole in 2018 was met with public outrage, resulting in the High Court overturning the ruling and ordering a review. The Parole Board ultimately decided that Worboys should continue serving his sentence, citing his “sense of sexual entitlement” and desire to dominate women as reasons for denying his release.

Following his arrest and subsequent confession, John Worboys pleaded guilty to administering a drug with the intent to commit rape or indecent assault and two additional counts of a similar nature. The revelations from the four victims who came forward were pivotal in his court proceedings and the final decision to keep him behind bars
