In search of the “good life,” Louise Yule and her partner settled on an Aberdeenshire farm 20 years ago. Originally planning to care for just a few of their own animals, they gradually transitioned into running an animal sanctuary that takes in creatures of all shapes and sizes, including horses, sheep, and ferrets. Louise and her partner, Mike Kinghorn, specialize in providing a forever home for animals that are elderly, have health issues, or display problematic behavior.
Their efforts at Halfpenny Farm, near Kintore, have recently been recognized with a nomination for the BBC’s Make a Difference awards in the Animal category. The story of Louise’s journey into animal rescue began 23 years ago when she decided to make a lifestyle change by leaving her job as a research technician at the University of Aberdeen. With the acquisition of Bournville the horse, the couple’s menagerie grew to include sheep, goats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and various rescue animals that found sanctuary on their farm.
Louise’s reputation for accepting unwanted animals spread through local veterinary circles, leading to an influx of animals in need of a permanent home. Over time, the farm transformed into a registered charity dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals that had nowhere else to go. Financial challenges arose when Mike lost his job and the couple had to rely on additional income sources to sustain their operations.
Despite facing the prospect of closure earlier in the year due to mounting costs, Louise saw a resurgence in support from volunteers and donors. Their dedicated team now works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for the sanctuary, ensuring the continued care of the existing animals. With approximately 1,000 animals having found refuge at Halfpenny Farm over the years, Louise remains grateful for the community of volunteers, donors, and furry residents that make the sanctuary feel like a “little family.
