An incident in east London has left five people hospitalized, with three in critical condition following a suspected arson attack at a restaurant. Emergency services responded to the fire on Woodford Avenue in Gants Hill, Ilford, at 21:00 BST on Friday. The injured individuals, three women and two men, were taken to the hospital for treatment, where they are currently receiving care. Witnesses reported seeing one of the men with severe burns all over his body after the blaze.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with firefighters and police working together to determine what led to the incident. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the suspected arson attack. The flames damaged part of the ground floor of the restaurant, but were successfully extinguished by 22:30. Fire crews were able to rescue the five hospitalized individuals from the building, while others managed to escape before the brigade arrived on the scene.
Edward Thawe, a hospital porter who witnessed the aftermath, described seeing one of the injured men with extensive burns. He recounted stepping outside his home with his son after hearing screams and being met with a distressing scene. The police and ambulance services were already present, with Thawe deeming the situation as “horrible” and something he would rather not witness again. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers assured the community that specialists are diligently working to uncover the details of the incident and urged residents to approach officers with any concerns.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting, also the Member of Parliament for Ilford North, expressed gratitude to the emergency responders for their swift and efficient actions in response to the incident.
