Cobalt Housing has recently introduced a new Smokefree Homes policy in an effort to prioritize the health and well-being of its tenants. This policy is designed to encourage residents to maintain smoke-free homes, aiming to safeguard themselves, their families, and their communities from the detrimental effects of tobacco and second-hand smoke.
Working in collaboration with Public Health Liverpool and its residents, Cobalt Housing, which oversees approximately 6,000 affordable homes in North Liverpool, has developed this voluntary policy. While not mandatory, it is intended to empower residents to make informed decisions regarding smoking within their homes.
Building on the positive results of the Smokefree Homes campaign in the Broadway neighborhood, which covers Croxteth and Norris Green, awareness initiatives have underscored the risks associated with second-hand and third-hand smoke. Children are particularly susceptible to the dangers of second-hand smoke, facing increased risks of asthma, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome. Moreover, children who grow up around smokers are three times more likely to take up smoking themselves. Last year, Liverpool City Council launched a tobacco control strategy with the goal of eradicating smoking within a generation.
Cobalt Housing’s initiative to promote smoke-free homes has been met with praise for its emphasis on health within housing. Councillor Rahima Farah, the Assistant Cabinet Member for Public Health, commended the housing provider for its leadership in prioritizing the creation of smoke-free environments, emphasizing the significant impact it can have on reducing health risks, particularly for children
