Lucy Connolly released from prison after race hate post on X

A 42-year-old woman, Lucy Connolly, who had previously been jailed for inciting racial hatred following the Southport attack, has recently been released from prison. Connolly, the wife of a member of Northampton Town Council, admitted to posting a profanity-laden message on X shortly after three girls were stabbed in Southport in July 2024. In her post, she called for “mass deportation now” and encouraged her followers to “set fire” to hotels accommodating asylum seekers. She received a 31-month prison sentence at Birmingham Crown Court in October and was released from HMP Peterborough early.

Following her conviction, Connolly was required to serve 40% of her sentence in prison before being granted release on licence. Her controversial tweet, posted on X on 29 July 2024, resulted in her arrest on 6 August 2024. Despite deleting her social media account, law enforcement officers were able to uncover other incendiary messages on her phone. The post garnered 310,000 views within a brief three-and-a-half-hour period before being taken down. During her court appearance, Connolly confessed to the charges of inciting racial hatred by circulating “threatening or abusive” written material on X.

Throughout the case, it was revealed that Connolly had actively engaged in disseminating inflammatory content that promoted racial animosity in the community. Her actions sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, leading to her subsequent arrest and imprisonment. The judge overseeing her trial emphasized the seriousness of her offenses and the detrimental impact they had on social cohesion. Connolly’s release from prison has raised concerns about the potential repercussions of online hate speech and the critical need to address and combat such harmful behaviors
