Aimee Betro: US hitwoman jailed for 30 years over bungled plot

A woman from the US who was involved in a failed assassination plot in the UK has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Aimee Betro, a resident of West Allis in Wisconsin, was recruited as a hitman in a scheme to target a British family in Birmingham in 2019. However, her attempt was thwarted when her gun malfunctioned during the attack, and she subsequently went on the run for nearly five years.

Convicted of conspiracy to murder, being in possession of a self-loading pistol with the intent to instill fear of violence, and illegally importing ammunition, Betro faced trial at Birmingham Crown Court. During the sentencing, Judge Simon Drew KC highlighted Betro’s significant role in the assassination attempt, which also involved Mohammed Aslam and his son Mohammed Nazir, both from Derby. The men were previously sentenced to 10 and 32 years for their involvement in the plot.

The planned attack stemmed from an altercation at Aslat Mahumad’s clothing boutique in July 2018, where Nazir and Aslam sustained injuries. On September 7, 2019, Betro parked outside Mahumad’s residence in Birmingham and attempted to shoot his son, Sikander Ali. Despite her intentions, the gun jammed, sparing Ali’s life. Betro then returned later that day, firing three shots into the home’s windows.

During the trial, it emerged that Betro and Naziz had initially connected through a dating app, building a close relationship through online communications. Betro visited the UK multiple times before agreeing to carry out the assassination plan in August 2019 out of love for Naziz. On the day of the incident, she purchased a used Mercedes, scouted the target’s neighborhood, and donned a niqab as a disguise. After the failed attempt, Betro fled to Manchester Airport and flew back to the US, evading law enforcement for several years
