Liverpool City Council takes next step in battle against littering

Liverpool City Council has taken another step in its efforts to crack down on illegal littering, fly-tipping, and dog fouling by introducing new environmental enforcement officers. These officers are part of a three-step plan by the Council to address the concerns of residents regarding these environmental issues. Waste Investigations Support and Enforcement (WISE) has been introduced to operate across Liverpool, with the goal of preventing environmental crimes and issuing Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) to offenders.

The Council has implemented increased FPNs for various offenses, such as littering, dog fouling, and fly-tipping. Offenders can face penalties ranging from £100 to £1000, depending on the severity of the offense. The new team of enforcement officers will work alongside the Council’s internal Environmental Crime Enforcement team, which has been operational for over a year. The Council’s focus is on encouraging behavior change rather than setting specific FPN targets for the teams.

The introduction of more environmental enforcement officers aims to allocate additional resources to combat environmental crimes and promote positive behaviors in the community. Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins emphasized the Council’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and order in the city, ensuring that those who disregard the environment are held accountable. John Dunne, Managing Director of WISE, highlighted the organization’s approach to improving local environmental quality through targeted interventions and community engagement. The collaboration between WISE and Liverpool City Council is expected to enhance environmental protection efforts across the city.

In line with the Council’s Recycling and Waste Strategy, these initiatives are designed to increase recycling rates, promote responsible waste disposal, and enhance waste collection efficiency. By working collaboratively with residents and local authorities, the Council aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment for all individuals living and working in Liverpool
