A 25-year-old man has confessed to manipulating deepfake nude images of a woman he had known since high school and sharing them with his acquaintances.
Callum Brooks used artificial intelligence (AI) to modify two photos the woman had posted on social media on June 24, 2022. Both images showed her in a state of undress, without her consent.
During the trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, it was revealed that the woman felt “immediate embarrassment and humiliation” upon discovering the deepfake images. This case is believed to be one of the first of its kind to be brought before a Scottish court.
Brooks, a resident of Easterhouse, Glasgow, accepted the charge of disseminating a photograph of the woman in an intimate setting without her permission. Despite the absence of a sexual motive behind his actions, as acknowledged by the Crown, he was fined £335 for his offense. Deepfakes involve digitally altered images or videos that convincingly replace one person’s features with another.
