This joint effort includes MPs, members of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLAs), Scottish Parliament (MSPs), and Welsh Senedd (MSs) who are calling for increased pressure on Israel to bring an end to the war in Gaza. The letter, spearheaded by the SDLP, has garnered support from various parties such as Sinn Féin, Alliance, the SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party, and People Before Profit.
The key demands outlined in the letter include the recall of Parliament, urgent diplomatic intervention, and a cessation of arms sales to Israel. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had previously stated that the UK would recognize a Palestinian state in September if substantive steps were not taken by Israel to address the dire situation in Gaza. The letter, signed by prominent figures such as SDLP leader Claire Hanna, Sinn Féin vice-president Michelle O’Neill, and SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, calls for the UK to use its diplomatic influence to ensure the unimpeded delivery of essential aid to Gaza’s residents. It also condemns the actions of Hamas and urges the UK government to support a ceasefire and meaningful diplomatic efforts to protect civilians and achieve a just and lasting peace in the region
