A Welsh brand has decided to remove its haircare products from the TikTok Shop after discovering several counterfeit versions being sold on the platform. Lucie MaCleod, the 25-year-old founder of Hair Syrup, stated that while the platform had been lucrative for her business, the presence of knock-off items forced her to discontinue selling through TikTok Shop. City of London Trading Standards expressed concerns about the safety of products being advertised on the platform, prompting MaCleod to take action.
MaCleod revealed that nearly half of her company’s revenue came from TikTok Shop last year, but that number has now decreased significantly due to the counterfeit products affecting customer trust. The ease with which unauthorized sellers could list products on the site was a major issue for Hair Syrup, leading to numerous complaints from customers who unknowingly purchased fake items. Despite efforts to have the fake products removed, MaCleod faced challenges in proving authenticity.
In response to the ordeal, MaCleod has shifted her product sales to an alternate cosmetic retailer platform and anticipates a change in consumer behavior following the TikTok Shop incident. She believes that customers are now more inclined to seek out authentic products from reputable sources. Meanwhile, Phil Lewis, director general of the Anti-Counterfeiting Group, emphasized the growing threat posed by counterfeit products, including the use of dangerous ingredients by criminals. The ACG is actively working with e-commerce platforms to enhance systems for identifying suspect sellers and protecting consumers from exploitation.
The situation serves as a cautionary tale for businesses operating on online platforms, highlighting the need for robust measures to combat counterfeit products and safeguard consumer interests.
