Iceland, a supermarket chain, has implemented a unique strategy to combat the rising levels of retail theft by financially rewarding customers who report incidents of shoplifting. The company’s executive chairman, Richard Walker, announced that customers who alert staff to a theft in progress will receive a £1 credit on their Iceland Bonus Card. With an estimated annual cost of £20m due to shoplifting, Iceland is looking to incentivize customers to help mitigate these losses.
Mr. Walker emphasized that the impact of shoplifting goes beyond just financial losses for the company. It also hinders their ability to lower prices and invest in staff wages. By encouraging customers to play a role in crime prevention, Iceland hopes to create a safer shopping environment and potentially reduce prices in stores. The initiative was first revealed during an interview on Channel 5 News.
While the reward does not require customers to apprehend shoplifters, they must report and verify the incident to qualify for the £1 bonus. Iceland is urging customers not to engage directly with shoplifters but to alert nearby staff with a detailed description instead. This move comes at a time when shoplifting rates in England and Wales are on the rise, impacting not only supermarkets but also pharmacies and other retailers.
In response to the escalating issue, the UK government has pledged to bolster neighbourhood policing by deploying thousands more officers on patrol by spring 2026. With police recording over 530,000 shoplifting offences in the year leading up to March 2025, it is evident that collaborative efforts between businesses, customers, and authorities are essential to address this growing concern
