In an effort to make his upcoming 100th birthday even more special, an appeal has been made for people to send birthday cards to World War Two veteran Dougie Shelley. Mr. Shelley, who joined the Royal Navy at the age of 17 as a seaman gunner, expressed that there are few veterans remaining from that era. He fondly remembers the camaraderie and celebrations that took place on his ship in Hong Kong upon hearing about Victory in Europe.
The Southend branch of the Royal Naval Association has initiated the appeal for Mr. Shelley, who is set to reach the impressive milestone on 23 September. Described as the branch’s last Arctic convoy veteran and a participant in D-Day, Mr. Shelley will have his birthday cake lovingly prepared by Chairman John Hawes, a former chef and baker on HMS Eagle. The planned cake is a classic Victoria sponge, a fitting and traditional choice for such a momentous occasion.
Having served on HMS Milne during D-Day, Mr. Shelley played a crucial role in supporting troops as they landed in Normandy and keeping the skies clear of enemy aircraft. Reflecting on the devastation of war, Mr. Shelley acknowledged the immense loss of life on all sides, emphasizing the stark reality that it was a matter of survival for those involved. The goal is to collect a minimum of 100 birthday cards for Mr. Shelley, with the intention of presenting them to him on his special day. Cards can be sent to the Royal Naval Association at 73-79 East Street, Southend SS2 6LQ
