Afghans resettled in UK affected by new MoD data breach

Reporters Liz Rawlings and James Saville of BBC Newsnight have revealed that thousands of Afghans who were brought to safety in the UK have been affected by a data breach incident involving a Ministry of Defence (MoD) sub-contractor. The breach occurred at Inflite The Jet Centre, a company providing ground-handling services for flights at London Stansted airport, potentially exposing the personal information of up to 3,700 individuals, including names, passport details, and Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (Arap) information.

This incident comes shortly after a previous data breach in 2022 that exposed the details of almost 19,000 people seeking refuge in the UK from the Taliban. The affected Afghans are those who arrived in the UK between January and March 2024 under a resettlement scheme designed for individuals who had collaborated with British troops. An email notification was sent out by the Afghan resettlement team warning families about the potential exposure of personal information, including passport details and Arap reference numbers. Among those impacted are British military personnel and former Conservative government ministers.

In response to the breach, Inflite The Jet Centre stated that the scope of the incident was limited to email accounts and has reported the matter to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Professor Sara de Jong of the Sulha Alliance charity, which supports Afghan individuals who worked with the British Army, expressed astonishment at the breach and emphasized the importance of expediting relocation cases for affected Afghans. The incident highlights ongoing security concerns and the need for swift action to protect vulnerable individuals from potential harm
