King Charles is set to pay tribute to those who made sacrifices and served during World War Two in a personal message commemorating the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. In an audio recording made earlier this month, the King will promise that those who fought and perished in the Pacific and Far East will always be remembered. The King, along with the Queen and Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, will participate in a remembrance service at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to mark the occasion on Friday.
VJ Day, observed on 15 August each year, signifies the day in 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, effectively bringing an end to the war. An estimated 71,000 soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth lost their lives in Japan, including over 12,000 prisoners of war held in Japanese captivity. The King will emphasize the invaluable lessons left by those who fought in the war, highlighting the need to protect freedom and the significance of collaboration between nations across different boundaries. He will stress that in times of war and peace, the most powerful weapons are not physical arms but the connections formed between individuals and nations. A national two-minute silence will be observed during the service, concluding with a flypast by the RAF Red Arrows, followed by a reception where the King and Queen will interact with veterans of the Far East conflict and their families. VJ Day follows more than three months after VE Day, which marked the end of fighting in Europe after Germany’s surrender. The 80th-anniversary events for VJ Day will come to a close with a reception for veterans at Windsor Castle in the Autumn
