The ongoing scandal within MasterChef has resulted in another contestant being removed from the show this year. A spokesperson for Banijay, the production company behind the show, acknowledged that one participant opted out of being featured in light of recent events. The decision was respected, and their segments were subsequently edited out of the series. Sarah Shafi, another contestant, was also taken out of the show after expressing a desire for her episode not to be aired in response to allegations against hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode.
Despite the controversy, the BBC chose to proceed with broadcasting this year’s amateur series, which had been filmed prior to the hosts’ dismissal. This decision was met with criticism from some women who came forward, along with the broadcast union Bectu, who emphasized that inappropriate behavior should not be glorified on a prime time platform. There were suggestions from former Celebrity MasterChef contestant Kirsty Wark that the BBC could have considered reshooting the series without the two co-hosts.
While Wallace and Torode still feature in the series that premiered last week on BBC One and iPlayer, episodes have been altered to feature fewer jokes and interactions between the hosts and the chefs. The episode that would have included the sidelined contestant aired with just five chefs instead of the usual six. The individual who requested not to be identified will not be showcased on the show, and Shafi’s episode is yet to be broadcast.
