Liverpool’s journey towards achieving net zero emissions is taking a major step forward with an innovative program that could potentially reduce up to 71% of carbon emissions from the city’s road network. ADEPT Live Labs 2: Decarbonising Local Roads in the UK, a three-year, £30 million initiative funded by the Department for Transport, is focused on decarbonizing the local highway networks across the UK.
Through a series of trials, the Live Labs program is utilizing research and innovation to facilitate the shift towards net zero carbon local roads and tackle the challenges associated with emissions and resilience in the city’s highway infrastructure. One of the most impactful schemes so far is the implementation of Milepave at Princess Drive, which is estimated to save approximately 152.6 tonnes of CO₂e, resulting in a 40% reduction in carbon emissions.
Notable examples of carbon-saving schemes include cold-applied road markings at Pinehurst Avenue leading to an 89% saving in emissions, a 37% reduction in carbon emissions at Alderwood Avenue through a lower-carbon road surface material, and a 23% reduction at Alderfield Drive by using low-carbon plant and equipment like Instagrid. The Liverpool demonstrator projects are expected to save around 327.4 tonnes of CO₂e and have the potential to eliminate as much as 71% of emissions if the lowest-carbon options are fully adopted.
Looking ahead, the program aims to further minimize the carbon footprint through innovative road design, construction, and maintenance practices. By testing new materials and processes, implementing cutting-edge projects across the city, and enhancing recycling initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of highway materials, Liverpool is paving the way for a more sustainable and emission-free future
