“The symbolism of a convict’s uniform was overwhelming,” she writes of the moment when officers handcuffed her. “Even now, when I close my eyes, I can still feel the cuffs biting into my wrists.”
Sturgeon describes the investigation as “an assault on democracy, justice and the rule of law” but says she does not regret her commitment to public life.
“As a lifelong optimist, I believe in hope and progress and the power of good. I am not, and never will be, broken.”
The former SNP leader says there have been positive changes in Scottish society since she entered politics in the 1990s, particularly in attitudes to gender, sexuality and poverty.
“The marches, the legislation, the public debates are a reflection of how far people in this country, especially women, appear to have travelled,” she writes.
However, despite the gains, she remains concerned about the impact of social media on public discourse.
“I don’t think anybody in public life can switch off from it,” she says.
“The timescales for forming conclusions have disappeared. Nuance has been lost. And civility. And accuracy. And respect for facts and truth. It makes the job of democratically elected politicians deeply challenging, and is a profound danger to democracy itself.
