An investigation is underway by the police following an incident where children attending a Scouts camp were filmed and subjected to “offensive” comments on social media, amidst baseless rumors about the camp serving as accommodation for immigrants. Gwent Police revealed that while the video has been removed, certain posts contained misinformation and inappropriate language.
Reports indicate that a group of individuals under the age of 18 were residing at the CRAI Scout Activity Park in Newbridge, Caerphilly, last week in collaboration with a charitable organization when they were recorded while preparing to depart. Councilor Adrian Hussey disclosed that he was informed about a video implying that the visiting group were “illegal immigrants being housed by the Scouts.”
According to Gwent Police Chief Superintendent Jason White, “The group shown in the video had traveled from another region to attend a popular Scout camp in Newbridge, with many of them being children.” White clarified that the campsite is not utilized for permanent housing purposes and is primarily used by police dog handlers for training when not being visited, with no officers stationed there.
Scouts Cymru released a statement emphasizing that the CRAI Scout Activity Park is an inclusive and hospitable campsite and activity center in the southern Welsh valleys, offering various outdoor activities for youth and community groups. They acknowledged a racially motivated incident targeting minors leaving after their visit to the activity center and reassured their collaboration with law enforcement to address the situation and ensure the safety of everyone on the premises.
