Dan Martin & Ben Carr reported from Leicester for BBC News about a man who was mistakenly issued a parking charge after his vehicle was confused with another car that had a nearly identical license plate. Richard Lynn shared his experience of paying £1.70 to park for around 30 minutes in Rushton’s Yard car park in Ashby, Leicestershire on 18th March 2024, only to later receive a demand for £165 from Horizon Parking’s solicitors. Despite the company providing photographic evidence of his Hyundai entering the car park, it was actually a Kia with a similar license plate that exited nine hours later.
Mr. Lynn expressed his frustration at the mix-up, stating, “It’s ridiculous. They have clearly different cars with similar but different plates but they just haven’t checked properly.” He received a threatening letter demanding £85 in March 2024, with a warning of legal action if not paid within 14 days. However, Mr. Lynn only learned of the issue in July of the same year, when solicitors representing Horizon Parking demanded £165. The confusion was exacerbated by Mr. Lynn’s failure to update his address with the DVLA until early 2024, possibly resulting in him missing earlier correspondence.
Despite Horizon Parking asserting that the matter was resolved upon being notified, Mr. Lynn disputed receiving any such communication from the company. He criticized the lack of human oversight in identifying the error and the aggressive tone of the letters he received. Expressing concern that others might similarly be coerced into paying unwarranted fines, Mr. Lynn emphasized the importance of challenging incorrect charges. While Horizon Parking stated its commitment to accurate parking charges and encouraged drivers to appeal in case of mistakes, it did not confirm whether the charge was canceled or legal proceedings stopped once the error was acknowledged
